The
Formation of The Rotary Club of Sandakan
The idea of forming a Rotary Club in Sandakan was first mooted in the
early month of January 1954. On the 13th January of that year, sixteen leading
citizens of the town's community met over dinner at Sabah Hotel to discuss the
matter seriously. A series of meetings followed and the Provisional Rotary Club
of Sandakan was finally launched. On 30th June 1954, Rotary International
notified the Club of its Charter. Its formation was sponsored by the Rotary Club
of Kinabalu, chartered earlier in 1952. Reg Johnson, an Australian and an
Assistant Commissioner of Customs, was elected Protem President and later the
Club's first President.
At the time of its inception, about half of the Club members were
Europeans. Like their Asian counterparts, they hailed from different creeds and
religions, different cultures and backgrounds. They represented different
occupations and were involved in multitude of enterprises. They came as
strangers but together were united as friends in one sizeable respect - they
were all committed to service.
Since then the Club has grown steadily in size. Today, it boasts of having
a total of 35 dedicated members on its roll including 2 Senior Actives, one of
whom is a Charter member.
Rotary Club of Sandakan sponsored the formation of the following clubs:-Rotary Club of Tawau, Chartered on 9 August 1967;
Rotary Club of Sandakan North, chartered on 19 May 1990; Innerwheel Club of Sandakan founded on 12 March 1983; Rotaract
Club of Sandakan, chartered on 1 June 1991 and the incorporation of the Interact Clubs of:
SMK St Mary's Convent on 14 June 1972; SMK St Cecilia Convent in August 1987;
SMK St Michael on 17 October 1993 and
SMK Sung Siew on 16 August 1989
